Power Walking - the Perfect Exercise

by Janice Burdon

June 2004

Power walking is the perfect exercise simply because it is a low impact exercise which does not put undue stress and strain on your joints.  There are other benefits, which include:

- Reduces tension, stress and anxiety (enhancing mental well-being)
- Tones and strengthens your muscles
- Boosts immune system
- Helps manage body weight and reduces body fat
- Increases bone strength (preventing osteoporosis)
- Improves cardiovascular fitness
- Eases pain and stiffness or arthritis
- Improves energy levels and self-esteem
- Relieves and prevents back pain
- Improves sleep patterns
- Is socially enjoyable

Sound too good to be true?  So why aren’t more people taking advantage of power walking?  Perhaps it’s all about attitude!  Our society tends to perceive walking as an easy, less trendy exercise, which may not give us the same benefit or challenge as other alternative exercises.  But power walking can be challenging IF the right techniques are performed and 100% effort given.  Techniques such as deep diaphragmatic breathing, pelvis and hip motion (walking a straight line), dynamic heel to toe push off, cupped hand position, and power arm position - 90 degrees.  If these techniques are put into play safely and effectively, you will definitely reap the benefits of a safe and effective work-out which will leave you feeling both invigorated and challenged.
