I'm Not Angry - I'm a Christian

April 2005

Many Christians are uncomfortable with anger, but it is important to recognize that anger is not a sin;  it's a sign that something is wrong.  It's a call to action.  The emotion itself is neither good, nor bad, it is what we do with our anger that can be a problem.  A key verse to remember is this, "The anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God."  (James 1:20)

Ask yourself, "What am I really angry about?"  Some things masquerade as the cause of our anger, but often the real source of the anger is deep-seated.  Surprisingly, anger often stems from our deepest fears:  fear of rejection, abandonment, humiliation, or insignificance.  Anger problems arise when we become a slave to our impulsivity, whether it is impulsive speech (saying hurtful things in anger that cannot be taken back), physically or emotionally hurting others or ourselves, or damaging property.

Are you afraid that if you let go of your anger you are giving in to someone or condoning something?  If so, you may be taking things into your own hands in an effort to change people or situations.  It is better to move over and let God take over.

So, what are we to do with anger when it flares?
