How Perimenopause (AKA ‘The Menopause Transition’) Affects Your Skin

Plus the anti-ageing skincare products that are actually worth buying.

It’s no secret that menopause (and the menopause transition which is known as ‘perimenopause’) come with some pretty big changes for the body like hot flashes, brain fog, mood changes and sleep problems. But, there’s one change that’s less often spoken about and that’s how perimenopause affects your skin.

Women’s Health Australia caught up with Menopause Specialist, Dr Heather Hirsch to find out what to expect.

“Skin is the largest organ so as estrogen starts to decline, a couple of things [happen]. First, [the drop in estrogen] decreases the quality of collagen, and collagen is what helps our skin look firm. As the quality of collagen decreases, there can be thinning of the skin so you can see dark spots or bags under your eyes and age spots more clearly,” explains Dr Hirsch.

“Then there’s a decline in skin elasticity – that bouncy, youthfulness – that can cause the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and skin sagging. And, thirdly, a decline in hydration of skin. When skin isn’t as hydrated, it doesn’t have that youthful, glistening, plump-like appearance,” Dr Hirsch continues.

With all this in mind, if you’d like to help soften the impact of perimenopause on your skin, you’ll want to reach for products with both firming and hydrating benefits. Here are our top skincare picks to care for your complexion during perimenopause and beyond.
