The Internet Is Obsessed With The Idea Of An ‘Internal Shower’, But What Is It Exactly?

Already, the video has amassed a staggering 72.4 million views and counting but whose to say it actually works and isn’t just a passing fad? According to nutritionist and founder of supplements brand The Farmassist, Irina Gamagina, there is something to the drink – but don’t go proclaiming it as a “miracle solution”.

As Gamagina explains to Glamour, chia seeds have long been known for their superfood properties, in that they greatly aid digestion. Thanks to their ability to attract water and create a gel-like substance, the seeds help stool pass more smoothly through the body. As a source of fibre, they also promote regularity and healthy bacteria in the gut, amongst other things.

But as Gamagina is quick to note, too much of something can be a bad thing and when it comes to fibre, too much of it can lead to problems like abdominal pain, bloating, gas and discomfort. While the recipe for the “internal shower” recommends 2tbsps daily, Gamagina says 1.5tbsps is more than enough to reap the benefits of chia seeds.

If you’re not quite up for the chia seed water drink, you can also try simply drinking lemon water before each meal as the citric acid in lemon helps to boost gastric acid, which in turn helps the body to break down and digest food. Ultimately, the “internal shower” might help things move along quicker in the body, but it’s not a miracle solution and too much of it can actually lead to greater problems when it comes to digestion.
